This song reveals some ugly history you don’t hear much about anymore. I’ll let the uploader explain:

“My family got paid in ‘script’ and I’ve seen some old papers…the ‘script’. It could just be spent in the Company Stores which were owned by the mines. Items were much higher priced in these stores …but they didn’t get money to spend in other stores. This song reminds me of the stories I heard as a child.”

ICYMI, that means the company enforced a system of slave labor. Then, the unions came along.
