A Grownup From the Eighties

When people think of 80s music, it’s the New Romantic English bands like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, or the American R and B of Prince and Michael Jackson that usually come to mind.

But American classic rockers made some of the best, most mature music of their careers in the 80s.

One of those was Billy Joel, whose album, The Nylon Curtain, had him leaving the obnoxious piano boy-man behind for good.

This song, the album’s first single is all but forgotten.

It shouldn’t be. In just over three minutes, Joel takes us on a chilling trip from the post-war baby boom to the fallout from Reaganomics. It’s a journey we haven’t recovered from yet.

This is “Allentown”.
