You’ll recognize the name of this tune, and maybe a few lines, but the similarities between this version and the one recorded by a certain bluegrass-loving rock band sometime around 1972, end there.

Such is the nature of traditional American folk music, which has grown and changed as it has traveled from one person to the next, in a centuries-long, musical game of Telephone.

These are The Monroe Brothers – Bill and Charlie – with “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”.
