What a nice, long set this is from The Del McCoury
Band! The sound quality is excellent, since it was recorded in
Louisville’s WFPK Studios. And what a set it is! You can tell these guys
are pros: their voices are raw, their fingers blistered from all-night
jamming (they made this appearance during IBMA of 2001), but the
harmonies buzz with sympathetic frequencies and the musicianship is
stunning.
I’m particularly impressed by McCoury’s rock-solid, tasteful rhythm guitar, and Jason Carter’s distinctive fiddling. These aren’t the licks you’re hearing everywhere else; Jason Carter is an original. If you’re studying bluegrass fiddle, Carter is an excellent example to follow.
Highlights? I think this is the best version, apart from Richard Thompson’s original, of “Vincent Black Lightning” I’ve ever heard. And Ronnie McCoury’s mando-driven instrumental, “Goldbricking” is terrific, full of unusual changes. I’ve never been a fan of the reedy quality of the senior McCoury’s voice. Nevertheless, this is exactly how bluegrass should sound. Bring the passion!
