This is a song about someone who allegedly failed spectacularly in front of thousands of people. In the crowd and sharing the stage were some of the biggest legends in the music business. Somehow, I don't think those legends were the ones who booed him and headed for the exits, though.
See, it costs something to be great, and what it costs is your attachment to others' opinions of you -- even if they are higher up on the food chain. You'd think, with our culture's fixation on fame and celebrity, that people would have learned by now.
Rick Nelson learned the hard way, and it gave him the most mature, intelligent single of his career.
