Rejoice, my fellow old people! The soulful sound of Stax Records is back.

It seems that Stax has been releasing records (mostly reissues) more-or-less steadily since Fantasy snatched them from the jaws of bankruptcy.

Then, last summer (Like I said, old people), they unleashed Nathaniel Rateliff on the world, and thE soul-gospel fusion for which Stax was so justly famous could be heard in the world again.

This is nothing short of a rave-up, complete with horn section (When was the last time you saw one of those onstage?), and classic B-movie trappings. The jumpy, party-anthem feel makes a provocative backdrop for gritty, unsparing lyrics. However he knows it, Nathaniel Rateliff knows the absolute truth about this subject, even if he won't admit it to himself.

It might be too late for a cure, but Rateliff goes down fighting in "S.O.B.".
