Henry Purcell Gets A Goth-Fabulous Makeover

This is not your father’s baroque music performance. The period instruments sing with color and character. All the performers emote – even the musicians. The Goth-fabulous setting is exquisite.

There’s plenty of what you’d expect here, too. Purcell, who seems to have been writing ahead of his time, sets the mood of high drama from the downbeat, and the two female soloists are astounding.

All that, and a lovely encore, too.

This is "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary" by Henry Purcell, performed by La Fenice, under the direction of Jean Tubéry.
