A Well-Oiled Soul Machine

The epitome of white soul singing and keyboard playing, right here. Better than Leon Russell ever was, too – more driven, less self-indulgent, not a wasted note.

In fact, everyone in this band seems to know what to play and when to play it. I am DYING over those marching-band licks from Michaels' long-time drummer and indispensable musical partner, Frosty. DYING over the way the bass player is right there with him on those paradiddles. Their musical gears mesh, and the result is a well-oiled soul machine that’s funky as hell.

This is Lee Michaels with “Do You Know What I Mean?”

In other news, I share a birthday and a birthplace with the talented Mr. Michaels.
