Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys spent at least part of New
Year’s Eve 1954 recording this tune for the “Bluegrass Instrumentals”
album. The wheel horse, incidentally, is the horse harnessed nearest the
front wheels of a wagon. Wheel horse has also come to mean a
hard-working, dependable human – like Bill Monroe and the guys who
follow his lead here.
