This wonderful article by the late, great Mike Seeger -- brilliant musicologist, multi-instrumentalist, and half-brother to Pete Seeger -- might be subtitled, "How Bluegrass Got Here".

The information about the old-time music scene is outdated, but Seeger’s observations about how bluegrass came to be are spot-on.
